The International Cricket Council has set a date for the Proteas captain Faf du Plessis’s appeal against his ball tampering conviction.

The ICC announced today that it will hear Du Plessis’ case on December 19, with Michael Beloff being appointed as the Judicial Commissioner to hear the appeal.

Du Plessis was found guilty of using a mint on the ball during the second Test against Australia in Hobart last month.

Du Plessis was fined 100% of his match fee but escaped a ban.

The Proteas batsman, Du Plessis, indicated that he will be appealing and lauded the Australian skipper, Steve Smith, for admitting that he does the same.

“I was very impressed with Steven Smith’s press conference, I actually sent him a message saying that he has gained a lot of respect from us as a team.

“To say that he does exactly the same as me takes a lot and I think he deserves a special mention from me.”

“Every team around the world shines the cricket ball,” Smith said during the press conference referred to by Du Plessis.

“I have seen Faf's comments in his press conference. And I make it very clear that we haven't come out and said anything about Faf or about how he was shining the ball or anything like that,”

“We along with every other team around the world shine the ball the same way.”

South Africa next face Sri Lanka in the first Test which starts on 26 December at St Georges’ Park in Port Elizabeth.
