Impact of drought on agenda for Bloemfontein meeting─── CATHY DLODLO 16:23 Fri, 29 Jul 2016
Bloemfontein - The impact of the drought on farms in the Free State is going to top the agenda of a meeting between President Jacob Zuma and farmers in the province.
Provincial ANC spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, says the party extended an invitation to white farmers after a weeklong campaign by the ANC in the province during which they met farmers and their farmworkers.
The meeting forms part of the president’s itinerary that includes a fund-raising dinner tonight and door-to-door visits in Thaba Nchu tomorrow. Meeko says other items under discussion would include challenges faced by farmers and a call to assist farmworkers to vote during the upcoming Municipal Elections.
"The drought has affected agriculture and is bound to affect the economy of the province. Now such a dialogue becomes very important so that we are able to win the issue of food security while facing such challenges. Also the issue of labour relations on farms needs to be on the agenda so that we can find amicable solutions," Meeko said.
