For the second week in succession, South African golf is celebrating a player in his early twenties winning on the European Tour.

The 21-year-old Haydn Porteous has won the Joburg Open by two strokes at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Club on Sunday.

This follows the two strokes victory of the 22-year-old Brandon Stone during the recent South African Open at Glendower.

He carded a final-round of three-under-par 69 on his way to a tournament tally of 18-under-par, two shots clear of Zander Lombard, and says it still needs to set in.

"There was a lot of sweat and tears and I can't get over this feeling right now,” said Porteous.

"When I get home and things start to calm down I'm going to have a proper think about it. All the doors that are open because of winning the Joburg Open, it's a dream come true."

Porteuos, Lombard, as well as the third placed Bjorn Akkeson of Sweden, have all qualified to play in the 145th Open Championship at Royal Troon in Scotland.

Porteuos adds that qualifying to play in the Open is a big deal.

“To qualify to get into the Open on merit is a big, big step in my career,” the 21-year-old said about playing in the world’s most iconic golf tournament.

“To play in the Open is a big deal for any player in the world, hopefully I can do South Africa proud and do well there.”

The Open will be played between 10 and 17 July.
