The former world number one, Rory McIlroy, of Northern Ireland, won the Irish Open at Kildare just outside of Dublin.

McIlroy, who is also the host of the event, beat Scotland’s Russell Knox and the Welshman, Bradley Dredge, by three strokes.

The newly crowned champion carded a final round of three under par 69, for a tournament tally of 12 under par.

Despite having won four Majors already, McIlory says his win in Ireland will stay with him for the rest of his life.

"I don't usually get emotional about golf or about wins, but this one, it means just a little bit more, because it's not just for myself. It's for a lot of other people.

"It's a day I'll not forget for a while."

The tour skips across the Irish Sea to England this week for the European Tour’s flagship event, the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
