Matsuyama also out of Olympics─── MORGAN PIEK 09:28 Tue, 05 Jul 2016
Fears over the Zika virus have claimed another victim ahead of next month’s Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
The Japanese golfer, Hideki Matsuyama, has become the latest player to add his name to the increasing list of top golfers withdrawing from the tournament.
Last week the world number one, Jason Day, of Australia confirmed his withdrawal, while South Africa’s top women’s golfer, Lee-Anne Pace, released a statement confirming that she is the first woman to withdraw from the event.
Ireland’s Shane Lowrey announced his withdrawal mere hours after that of the world’s top golfer.
Other players who have already confirmed their intentions of not competing are Branden Grace, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel of South Africa, Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland, Marc Leishman and Adam Scott of Australia, as well as Vijay Singh of Fiji.
The Olympics starts on 5 August with the golf scheduled to be played between 11 and 14 August.
