Walker takes 1st round lead at Baltusrol─── MORGAN PIEK 08:52 Fri, 29 Jul 2016
The USA’s Jimmy Walker leads the PGA Championship being played at the Baltusrol Golf Club by one stroke after the opening round.
The Texan carded a round of five under par 65 to hold a one shot lead over Germany’s Martin Kaymer, Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo and England’s Ross Fisher.
The 2016 Open Champion, Henrik Stenson, continued his good form from Royal Troon a fortnight ago and is in shared 5th on three under, along with Harris English, James Hahn and the spaceman, Andy Sullivan.
Following his round, the Ice Man – Stenson, said he was happy but it could have been better.
“Maybe felt like a slight lack of preparation on the putting green this week was showing up on a few occasions, but all in all, I think I putted OK, and I made the most of the ones I needed to make,” he said after needing 31 putts on the round.
“I felt that when I left the putting green, my warm-up today, I didn't feel I was quite settled in. But I still had to run to the range to get the rest of the warm-up in.
“So I felt I wasn't quite as comfortable on the greens, but all in all, I think I handled that pretty well.
“So I’m happy with the day's work, and it's another 2 1/2 days to try and be in position on Sunday afternoon, which is what it's all about.”
South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen is a further stroke back on two under while Branden Grace is on level par.
