Arnold Palmer - Andrew Redington

The King – Arnold Palmer - has died at the age of 87.

Palmer passed away in a Pittsburgh Hospital on Sunday ago due to complications of a heart condition, with his wife and two daughters at his bedside.

The legendary golfer is one of the most popular and iconic figures in the sport and until last year still played the traditional first shot at the Master at Augusta alongside his fellow American, Jack Nicklaus, and South Africa’s Gary Player.

This year was the first year in decades that Palmer didn’t make an appearance on the first tee with the two remaining members of the Big Three.

The former world number one, Rory McIlory, of Northern Ireland, who won the Tour Championship in Atlanta on Sunday to claim the 2016 Fedex Cup, reacted to the news of Palmer’s passing.

"He has meant so much to golf worldwide," said McIlroy.

"Arnold wasn't the most successful player ever but he was the player that brought the game to the masses.

"If it wasn't for Arnold Palmer, we wouldn't be playing for these obscene amounts of money we play for every week."

During his illustrious career, Palmer won 62 PGA Tour titles which included four Masters, two Open Championships and one US Open title.

The King may be gone, but will never be forgotten. Rest in peace, Arnie.
