The Olympic legend, Michael Phelps, the actor Bill Murray and musician, Niall Horan, headlined the celebrity match ahead of this week’s 41st Ryder Cup which will be played at Hazeltine.

The USA and Europe go head-to-head against and the Americans are under pressure to bring an end to Europe’s dominance of the event of late.

Europe has won the prestigious tournament which turns golf into a true spectator sport eight times in the last times the event has been played.

Phelps became the most successful Olympics of all time in August during the 2016 Rio Olympics with his six medals in the pool.

Phelps now has a total of 28 medals which include a staggering 23 gold, 3 silver and 2 bronze.

The swimmer is a keen golfer and also holds a golfing world record. During the 2012 Dunhill Links, Phelps sunk a 159ft putt, which is a longest televised putt in the history of the game.

While golf and swimming are individual sports, they are instances where they become teams sports such as swimming relays and the Ryder Cup.

Phelps had a motivational talk with the US Ryder Cup team ahead of the Celebrity match and he reminded that them that both sporting codes can successfully be practised as team sports.

“I had the privilege of going over at talking to the guys last night and I talked about being part of relays and being part of team USA,” said Phelps.

“It was really just about coming together as a team, that’s one think I saw, we had some much team unity and we put everything else aside.

“Golf and swimming are both individual sports and I think they have a lot of similarities.

“I think when you become part of a team and become part of a team to represent you country you throw everything out of the door and try do the best you can for your country.”

The 2016 Ryder Cup opening ceremony takes place on Thursday evening with the golf teeing off in their early hours of Friday.
