South Africa’s Richard Sterne made a big statement yesterday by claiming a share of second of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews in Scotland.

Sterne carded 19 under par for the tournament to share second with England’s Ross Fisher.

This was the South African’s best ever finish at the prestigious European Tour tournament after sharing 6th in 2003 and 2014.

The display by Sterne speaks volumes of the hard work he has put in over the past year after nearly having to retire from the sport due to a persistent hip problem injury.

Sterne says his tournament at the home of golf has opened the door for him leading into the remainder of the European Tour’s Race to Dubai series.

“I was 72 on the Order of Merit so I needed a decent week just to get into the last few events of the year, which you don’t want to miss.

"At least I’ve got a bit of a schedule to the end of the year now.

“It’s been really tough coming back from the injury. I’ve been putting in more effort over the last two years than I ever have.”

“I hit some really good shots this week and trusted myself a bit more. It was nice to see that I was hitting better golf shots. I also putted really nicely and felt relaxed.

“I’ve had sixth twice and now a second in this tournament, so hopefully I’ll get a win here one day. It would be nice to win on this 18th fairway.”

Tyrrell Hatton was, however, unstoppable and carded 23 under par for the tournament to reign supreme at the Old Course.

Next month’s Nedbank Golf Challenge at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City is also a part of the Race to Dubai series and now carries a winnings cheque of 7 million dollars.
