Bloemfontein’s Dean Burmester played another good round on the European Tour on Thursday, with a solid round of three under par 69 during the opening round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

Burmester, who finished in fourth at the South African Open at Glendower on Sunday, sunk seven birdies during his round but a double bogey on the 6th and bogeys on the 9th and 16th prevented him from finishing just a single shot off the lead.

The 27-year-old tees off on Friday morning, five shots off the pace for a share of 27th.

South Africa’s leading golfer, Branden Grace, is one shot ahead of Burmester after five birdies and a bogey left him on 4 under par for a share of 13th overnight.

The current world number four and European Tour Player of the Year, Henrik Stenson, leads after the opening round on 8 under par 64 after a blemish-free round which saw him sinking six birdies on the back nine.
