Port Elizabeth - A R100 000 reward for information that could lead to the arrest and prosecution of rhino poachers in the Eastern Cape, is being offered by the Wilderness Foundation Africa.

"2016 has been a bleak year for rhino in the province, with a number of brutal poaching incidents having taken place," it said in a statement issued on Friday.

"If members of the public have any information that can assist in the apprehension of these perpetrators, they can contact the Wildlife Crime Tip-off Line. The number is 078 696 9494."

Chief operating officer of Wilderness Foundation Africa, Mathew Norval, said the organisation preferred not to get into the specifics about the most recent incidents. However, they were confident that there were people with information that could assist with arrests.

The Wilderness Foundation Africa's reward is being offered through the Forever Wild Rhino Protection Initiative and the Wildlife Operations Group.

On Thursday, Fin24 reported that South Africa had dumped its proposal to legalise the international trade in rhino horns.

At least 1 338 rhinos were poached across Africa in 2015 – the highest total ever reported.
