Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma has appointed former IEC chairperson, Pansy Tlakula, as the country’s Information Regulator.

Tlakula was nominated to the position by the National Assembly, with opposition from some parties.

The newly established Information Regulator will be responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance and handling complaints related to the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI).

Tlakula will work with Advocates Lebogang Cordelia Stroom and Johannes Collen Weapond as full time members.

Profesor Tana Pistorius and Sizwe Snail Ka Mtuze will be part-time members of the Information Regulator.

“The members have been appointed with effect from 1 December 2016 and will serve the period of five years,” the Presidency said.

Tlakula resigned as chair of the IEC in 2014 after she was taken to court by a number of political parties who claimed her integrity had been compromised.

This was after the public protector found there was maladministration in the procurement of the electoral body's Riverside Office Park building in Centurion Pretoria. National Treasury had also found that the process was neither fair, transparent, nor cost-effective.

The constitutional court dismissed Tlakula's bid to challenge an electoral court ruling that she be investigated for misconduct by Parliament with the view to remove her from office. She argued during her interviews by members of Parliament that she was never found guilty of misconduct.
