Scores left homeless after Durban shack blaze─── 14:09 Wed, 30 Nov 2016
Durban - Scores of people have been left homeless after a fire razed about 20 shacks in the Sea Cow Lake informal settlement in Durban on Wednesday.
Regan Stander of National Emergency Assist Services said eThekwini metro firefighters and medics responded to the incident shortly after 09:00.
"We responded to the fire and we found that nearly 20 shacks had caught alight. At this stage, it is suspected that illegal electricity connections may have caused the blaze," he said.
"The firefighters managed to bring the fire under control. They are in the process of dousing all the hotspots," Stander added.
He said that no one had been injured in the frenzied efforts to pull valuables from flaming shacks.
"People are trying to salvage what they can from the burnt remains of their homes. Scores of people are homeless now," Stander said.
