Bloemfontein - Water supply to residents in the drought-stricken Eastern Free State towns of Ficksburg, Marquard and Clocolan, is expected to be restored by Wednesday.

This comes after residents had no tap water since Saturday because of low water levels in the Caledon River, which is their main supplier of water.

Municipal Manager of the Setsoto Municipality, Tshepiso Ramakarane, says the municipality anticipated that the river will dry up and cause water shortages. He says that is why it was arranged for water to be supplied by the Lesotho Highlands.

According to him water was already released from the Lesotho Water Scheme yesterday. It is expected to be extracted from the Caledon River at various points so that the water can  be purified at treatment plants, after which it will be pumped to reservoirs to be distributed to residents.

Ramakarane says interim measures have been put in place to provide water to communities until the water supply is restored. Water tankers are filled in Rosendal and Ladybrand, among others. Water is also extracted from boreholes at Senekal.
