Mafube’s dire financial situation 'not due to negligence' | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta) in the Free State say Mafube Municipality’s dire financial situation is not due to negligence.

This follows reports that employees of Mafube, comprising Frankfort, Tweeling, Cornelia and Villiers, were last paid their salaries December last year. The South African Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) have also demanded Mafube to be placed under administration. Cogta’s HOD, Victor Duma, says Samwu has the right to voice their opinion, although the country is approaching municipal elections this year and they wouldn’t encourage any municipality to be placed under administration.

Duma says Cogta and the provincial treasury have been in contact with the municipality.

“Most municipalities rely on their electricity supply sales for revenue. Mafube concluded a contract they had with a service provider, which took over their electricity functions. That has also contributed to Mafube’s situation as their income decreased to a level where they couldn’t service their municipal operations. However, as Cogta, we don’t encourage to put any municipality under administration.”
