Rustenburg - A 34-year-old man was arrested after he was found in possession of a cache of weapons and ammunition in Kameeldrift near Brits, North West police said.

Police spokesperson, Sabata Mokgwabone, said the man was arrested on Tuesday.

“Police recovered an unlicensed R4 rifle, seven magazines, 239 live rounds, a stun grenade, two 9mm magazines with 30 [rounds of] live ammunition. These weapons were found during an operation that was conducted by the police at Kameeldrift near Brits and a 34-year-old suspect was nabbed,” Mokgwabone said.

The man was expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Thursday where he will face charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.

In a separate incident, police confiscated 55 dangerous weapons at the Impala mine hostel in Luka, a village north of Rustenburg, during a search operation.

Mokgwabone said during the operation two people were also arrested for possession of dagga and each paid R150 admission of guilt fines. He added that five cattle, three calves and two heifers, worth R25 000, were also recovered. The cattle were found at the Manharand feed lot outside Rustenburg where they were identified by their rightful owners.
