Bloemfontein - Free State Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman added her voice to calls for government to criminalize racism during a legislature sitting today.
Rockman - the only white member of the Free State executive council - said she does not presume to speak for most or many or even a few white people, but at the very least she felt compelled to say to Matthew Theunissen: “Not in My Name”. Theunissen, a Capetonian, is in hot water for launching a racist attack against the Sports Minister on Facebook.
Theunissen slated Fikile Mbalula's decision to ban certain sporting bodies for hosting major events. The 26-year-old used the ''K word'. Rockman said Theunissen and others may spit in the face of the Freedom Charter and the Bill of Rights, but they will not do it in her name.
She urged government to expedite the legislation that is required to criminalize racism.
