Numerous arrests after public violence in Kimberley─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 12:29 Mon, 23 May 2016
Kimberley - Seventeen suspects are expected to appear in the Galeshewe Magistrate's Court in connection with public violence soon.
Northern Cape police spokesperson, Olebogeng Tawana, says ten men and seven women were arrested at the Retswelele township in Kimberley this morning. The suspects were among groups of people who participated in service delivery protests earlier today.
Tawana says residents barricaded several streets leading to Retswelele with burning tyres, rocks and tree branches. He says police are, however, monitoring the situation which is calm at the moment. The barricaded streets have also been re-opened even though some debris are still next to the roads.
One of the protesters who prefers to remain anonymous told OFM News earlier that people are up in arms against the Sol Plaatje Municipality, which is denying them an opportunity to erect shacks in Retswelele. According to reports, some local residents could not get to work this morning because of the barricaded roads.
The municipality has not yet commented on the issue.
