Botshabelo calm at the moment | News Article

Bloemfontein - Bloemfontein police say the situation seems to be calm in Botshabelo after residents started protesting on Sunday.

Residents showed their dissatisfaction with the appointment of certain councillors in the different wards as well as the movement of wards to other sections.

Police spokesperson, Annelie Wrench, says angry residents blocked off roads and burned tyres in certain roads in the L-section as well as Kopanong.

“This morning at 01:45 about 800 community members grouped at the L-section in front of a shop owned by a Chinese national and they looted it. Members of the Public Order Policing dispersed the crowd with teargas and rubber bullets. ”

Five people were arrested for public violence on Monday and are set to appear in court soon. Wrench says the Public Order Policing are currently monitoring the situation.
