Mining sector still largest contributor to NC economy─── CATHY DLODLO 07:32 Thu, 26 May 2016
Kimberley - The mining sector is still the largest contributor to the Northern Cape's economy despite thousands of jobs being shed this year.
During a presentation to the National Council of Provinces’ Finance Committee, Finance MEC, Mac Jack, said the mining sector accounts for a quarter of the provincial economy. This despite the fact that more than 3 200 workers in the sector were retrenched in January alone in the Kathu area.
Jack said although the electricity sector doubled its contribution to the provincial economy in the preceding ten years, labour absorption by this sector was still very low at 1%.
Residents in Loeriesfontein celebrated the arrival of the first batch of wind turbine components this week for a project that will see the town becoming home to the largest expanse of wind turbines on the continent. It is hoped the project will reduce the 60% unemployment rate in the town.
