Parys - Three of the four people who were arrested on Tuesday in connection with the alleged vigilante killing of two suspected farm attackers, have been granted bail.

Miela Jansen van Vuuren, Cor Loggenberg, Loedie van der Westhuizen and a minor accused appeared in the Parys Magistrate's Court this morning. Jansen van Vuuren, Loggenberg and Van der Westhuizen were granted bail of R10 000 each while the minor was released into the care of his parents on a warning. Everybody present was earlier ordered to leave the courtroom so as not to identify the minor accused.

Loggenberg and Van der Westhuizen are related to two of the seven other people already arrested in connection with the crime. Van der Westhuizen's grandfather was the alleged victim of the farm attack. His father, Boeta, was the first person arrested.

The four were allegedly part of a group of men, mostly farmers, who assaulted Samuel Tjixa and Simon Jubeba in January. Nine other men have already been arrested in connection with the crime, however, charges against two, a father and son, were dropped.

Loedie van der Westhuizen was allegedly attacked on his farm near Parys by two armed men who demanded R20 000. He was allegedly pistol-whipped, but managed to run into his house and press a panic button. His alleged attackers then ran away.

A group of local farmers tracked and confronted the pair and allegedly assaulted them before handing them to the police. Tjixa was admitted to Parys Provincial Hospital and Jubeba to Pelonomi Hospital. Jubeba was declared dead on arrival. Tjixa died later.

The four accused will then appear in the same court again tomorrow with the other seven accused in the case, namely Boeta, Anton Loggenberg, police captain Henk Prinsloo, Fanie Oosthuizen, Wian van der Westhuizen, Müller van der Westhuizen and Lodewikus van der Westhuizen.
