Bloemfontein - Some of Mangaung’s roads are being blockaded with stones, refuse and burning tyres since early this morning.

Cars and taxis wanting to use the blockaded roads, among others Moshoeshoe, Kukuzela and Maphisa, are forced to turn back.

This follows Dark City ANC residents obstructing part of Maphisa Road last night after the announcement of their new councillor candidate was revealed by the party. This led to a division within the party at Ward 3, where most residents are against the new candidate, Khosi Mogapi, and prefer Pekenene Machachamisa. Residents claim Mogapi’s selection is based on nepotism.

Mogapi, who might be the new councillor of Ward 3 (comprising parts of Dark City, Silver City, Bochabela and Rocklands among others), is the daughter of Xolo Pongolo, the ward’s current councillor who is also a Mayoral Committee Member (MMC) of the Mangaung Metro. A 22-year-old resident, Lucky Nkokha, says the current situation is disappointing and not worth it.

“People were shot on Monday night and this is continuing to happen today. It is really not a good thing for us and it is affecting us emotionally. Another issue is that we haven’t been receiving any bursaries for further studies. These are some of the points most people are fighting for.

"We keep on voting and we don’t see delivery, which is really a bad thing for us, especially for the youth. I don’t see a solution at this point in time. What is actually happening, is the ANC is divided into two teams.

"According to my perspective, I think it would be best if we give Mogapi a chance and then Machachamisa. They can both serve three months each, so that we will be able to see and judge what they can deliver. I think that might be a solution.”
