Kimberley - A number of employers in the Northern Cape Province are still not complying with labour legislation and government doesn’t seem to have enough resources to take action.

This is some of the issues that were raised at the listening campaign for workers convened by the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the province.

The Regional Shop Steward Council took place at various towns including Kimberley, Kuruman, Upington, De Aar and Springbok during the week.

Cosatu has vowed to engage with government to intervene and added that the Labour Department’s enforcement should be stricter and accurate.

According to Cosatu’s provincial secretary, Anele Gxoyiya, the platform that was provided for workers to voice their grievances, was successful.

“The most common issue that came out of all those meetings, was that workers still support the Cosatu congress resolution, which is to support the ANC during the local government elections. However, they gave us a clear mandate that we need to engage with the ANC so that the progression policy that the party has taken, should be implemented. We are of the view that the ANC has good policies, but there is a shortfall at the level of implementation," he said.
