Qwaqwa - Police in the Eastern Free State has revealed that livestock theft has become a major problem in surrounding areas between Qwaqwa and the Lesotho border.

Four suspects were arrested on Friday for possession of 42 suspected stolen livestock. In separate incidents three men in their 30’s were found loading 17 sheep at the back of their van, and a 40-year-old man was also found in possession of 24 sheep and a goat.

Police spokesperson, Mmako Mophiring, says none of the suspects could account for the livestock. According to him, two vans used for transportation were seized, as well as the livestock.

“We want to request the community out there to assist us with this problem. Besides these four suspects that have been arrested, we also have another incident where 14 donkeys were stolen. If the public sees anyone in possession of suspected stolen stock or they come across an animal that is loitering around the road, please contact your nearest police station,” Mophiring said.

Cases of possession of suspected stolen livestock are being investigated.  The four suspects are expected to appear before the Tseseng Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of possession of suspected stolen livestock.
