ANC responds to allegations of intimidation ahead of elections | News Article

Bloemfontein - The ANC in the Free State says allegations that some of its members are guilty of intimidation and malicious damage to property, are fabrications.

This follows after an independent candidate in the upcoming 2016 Municipal Elections, Jeffrey Mangena, said in an interview with OFM News that he is going to lay a complaint with the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) against the ANC.

Mangena is contesting in ward 50 in the Naledi Local Municipality, which is soon to be incorporated with the Mangaung Metro.

Free State ANC spokesperson, Thabo Meeko, says there are numerous allegations by independent candidates and members of opposing political parties who are trying to paint the ANC in a bad light.

"It is noted that there are attempts by opposing parties to claim that the ANC is bridging the electoral code of conduct. Opposing parties fear for the ANC’s victory in the Free State. Meeko adds that members of the ANC are familiar with the Independent Electoral Commission’s code of conduct and have been trained on correct measures to take when campaigning. He says any party that is of the view that its right to campaign has been infringed, should rather lodge a claim with the Electoral Commission," says Mangena.
