Women in court over Bloemfontein bar brawl─── 12:18 Wed, 24 Aug 2016
Bloemfontein - A young woman who allegedly struck another woman in the face with a beer bottle at the Western Saloon just outside Bloemfontein says she acted in self-defence.
Bianca Wernich, 21, and Velisha Venter, 20, were in the Bloemfontein Regional Court on Tuesday for mediation, Netwerk24 reported, but the process ended unsuccessfully.
Wernich, who allegedly assaulted Venter on February 6 in the bar at the Bain Game Lodge, claimed Venter also hit her.
Johan Kramer, on behalf of Wernich, applied for a postponement to get all the charges of assault against Venter added to the roll.
He said Wernich was going to plead self-defence.
Prosecutor Lucky Mukatuni opposed the application for postponement and said the case was ready to be heard. He added that the State would prosecute Venter if it deemed it necessary.
Magistrate Ephraim Sebe postponed the case to September.
Earlier, Venter told Netwerk24 that two of Wernich's sisters bumped into her when she was buying a drink at the bar. She said she had asked them to leave her alone.
Wernich then hit her in the face with a beer bottle, she alleged, and the three sisters ran away when she started bleeding.
In April, local businessman Marchant van der Merwe was also severely assaulted at the Western Saloon, Netwerk24 reported.
He said he sustained memory loss and injured his neck and back after a man first assaulted him and damaged his car on purpose as he left the premises.
