Kimberley - The Department of Health in the Northern Cape is appealing to parents and guardians of girls aged nine years and older to sign consent forms for their daughters to receive the second dose of the HPV vaccination.

According to the Department of Health spokesperson, Lulu Mxekezo, the HPV campaign will continue until 6 September 2016.

HPV can cause cervical and other cancers, including male and female genital cancers. Mxekezo says consent forms were distributed at all public schools as girls cannot be vaccinated without valid consent from parents or guardians.

Mxekozo says they aim to vaccinate all girls in Grade 4 in all public schools.  The girls received their first dose of the vaccination between February and March 2016.

She says girls younger than nine years old cannot be given the vaccine. The vaccine used in this campaign is Cervarix.
