Bethlehem: Dog used to commit crimes | News Article

Bethlehem - Police in the Free State are warning residents of Bethlehem to avoid two men with a dog approaching them on the street. The men allegedly attack and rob their victims using the dog as a distraction.

Police spokesperson, Zweli Mohobeleli, says in the latest incident a man was walking to work last Saturday when the men confronted him. He was hit and kicked after which the robbers took his cell phone and set the dog loose.

The animal bit the victim in the face.

He says police suspect the same robbers with the same dog might be involved in an incident in May this year when a 21-year-old woman, waiting to be picked up in Church Street, was robbed and raped by a man with a dog.

The police suspect that other similar attacks have taken place, but people have not reported it to the police. Mohobeleli appeals to the public to come forward if they were attacked. This will help police to narrow down their investigation. He says people should avoid walking alone in the early morning hours or late at night.

Mohobeleli says at this stage police do not have a clear description of the involved dog or the suspects. Anyone with information can contact police at 058-307-5700 or 08600-10111.
