Bloemfontein - A co-driver of the Greyhound passenger bus involved in a head on collision with a car late Friday night on the N1 Highway about 20km south of Bloemfontein has been released from hospital.

Greyhound’s Customer Care Manager, Juan-Pierre Du Buisson, says the driver of the bus sustained serious injuries while a cabin attendant is in a stable condition. He says she underwent surgery yesterday after sustaining a fracture.

According to Du Buisson the bus departed from Johannesburg to Mossel Bay via Bloemfontein on Friday. According to Trauma Response Africa’s spokesperson, Stanley Schimper, a US couple in the car died on the scene while jaws of life had to be used to free the trapped Greyhound personnel. They were taken to the local Pelonomi Hospital.

Du Buisson says none of the 20 passengers sustained injuries. Customer care was in contact with all passengers and a replacement coach was mobilised immediately. According to Du Buisson, eyewitness reports indicated a car overtook another bus and collided head-on with the Greyhound bus.

The names of the deceased have not been released yet.
