Bloemfontein - The 23 students from the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein who were arrested during a protest, have been released in the local Magistrate's Court with a warning.

They were also relwased on condition that they appear in court on the morning of all future court dates. They are also not allowed to commit a schedule one offence until the matter is concluded.

They were arrested early yesterday morning for malicious damage to property, illegal gathering and public violence.

The State earlier asked that the students remain in custody for another week to allow the State to verify the addresses of the accused, as they could be possible flight risks.

The defence however argued that the students will be in no man's land should they remain in custody and that the addresses can easily be accessed despite the fact that the institution is closed already.

They will be back in court on October 18.

All academic activities at CUT were earlier suspended at both the Bloemfontein and Welkom campus until October 10 due to security concerns on campus regarding protests over fee increments for next year.
