SAHRC assists 23 CUT students─── CATHY DLODLO 17:33 Wed, 28 Sep 2016
Bloemfontein - The South African Human Rights Commission has intervened on an urgent basis to assist a group of Central University of Technology (CUT) students this morning.
The 23 students from the university’s Bloemfontein campus were arrested early yesterday morning when they took to the streets as part of national protest action over fee increments and free education at higher education institutions.
The students appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate's Court on charges of public violence, damage to property and illegal gathering.

Free State SAHRC Provincial Manager, Buang Jones, says the students requested assistance with legal representation this morning.
"The SA Human Rights Commission facilitated legal representation for the arrested students. We have good relations with Legal Aid South Africa in our province. This was brought to our attention when students came to our office. We then engaged with Legal Aid SA to provide free legal service to them."
