This is according to the Free State MEC for Education, Tate Makgoe. Speaking at a launch of revamped primary schools in Botshabelo, Makgoe said the time has come to prioritise resources needed at primary level. 

He mentioned that overcrowding of classrooms and a lack of proper sanitation were among the biggest challenges faced by learners in rural areas. 

Makgoe added that a total of 11 schools were revamped and next on the department’s list will be developing resources at special schools in the province.

"In previous years, learners’ pass rates were poor and we knew that a lack of resources was one of the reasons why learners were performing poorly. We had to intervene to ensure that learners in these areas were afforded an equal opportunity. Learners in Botshabelo and Thaba Nchu should have access to world-class educational tools," Makgoe added.

Ditholwana Primary School, Phano Primary School, Nteboheng Intermediate Primary School, Mabela Primary School, Lefikeng Secondary School, Seemahang Secondary School, Lenyora La Thuto Secondary School in Botshabelo, and Refentse Primary School, Moroka Secondary School, Kobue Primary School, and Phetogane Secondary School in Thaba Nchu were schools that were part of the School Development Programme.

Makgoe mentioned that the Provincial Education Department worked in partnership with Kagiso Shanduka Trust.
