Kimberley - Vice-Chancellor of the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley, Yunis Ballim, believes the demands made by students at his institution are not beyond reason, but fears the effect ongoing protests could have on students.

Ballim received a memorandum of demands from protesting students this morning, after two weeks during which there have been no academic activities at the university due to ongoing fees protests.

Students' demands include a zero percent increase in fees, as well as a commitment from the university to assist any students who are unable to afford class fees. They also demand the insourcing of all university staff, including cleaners and security officers.

Ballim says if the university is allowed to reopen next week, there is still hope to salvage the academic year.
