FS Police welcome new Commissioner and MEC─── 10:39 Sat, 22 Oct 2016
Bloemfontein - The newly appointed MEC for Police, Roads, and Transport, Sam Mashinini, says the Free State will soon be counted as the safest province in the country.
Mashinini spoke at the Free State SAPS Excellence Awards held in Bloemfontein last night.
He applauded the work done by the former MEC, Butana Khompela, and the outgoing Provincial Commissioner, Thabethe Mpembe.
Mashinini commits to prioritise community safety and to strengthen a working relationship between the police and communities.
"Statistics show that the Free State is one of best provinces when it comes to combating crime, however, murder is still a problem in the province. Our strategy is to primarily reduce crime in the province and to ensure that citizens feel safer."
The outgoing Provincial Commissioner, Thabethe Mpembe, urges the police in the province to uphold the principle of “Batho Pele” and to mobilise more communities in combating crime. He says there remains a need for the SAPS to establish and maintain relations with communities. Mpembe adds that this will increase whistle blowers and reduce crime.
