Bloemfontein - The Free Education Movement (FEM) at the University of the Free State (UFS) has pledged its solidarity to workers who are facing the possibility of suspension for allegedly participating in the student protests over free education.

The movement yesterday handed over a memorandum to the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Nicky Morgan. This comes after workers allegedly participated in protests with students on 13 and 14 October, according to the FEM.

They demanded that the workers, currently suspended, return to work immediately. They must also receive back-pay upon their return to work.

One of the leaders from FEM, Gcinumuzi Radebe, says the approximately 80 to 100 outsourced workers must be "insourced".

Radebe says they are expecting a reply from the management today. The university is yet to respond to an OFM enquiry.

“The crux of the memorandum was that if the university is taking a decision to terminate the contracts of the workers they must insource them immediately. The process of insourcing was already under way. So in this event they must insource them,” says Radebe.
