Bloemspruit Police Station a war zone | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Bloemspruit Police Station – with the second highest murder and violent crime rate in the province - has become a war zone for police officers.

Bullet holes in the walls of the police station are evidence of how drive-by shooters randomly fire at the building. This is some of the findings during an inspection in loco conducted by the Public Service Commission (PSC).

Provincial Commissioner Henk Boshoff says flying bullets, a shortage of police vehicles and dingy offices without air conditioning are just some of the challenges the men and women in blue at Bloemspruit have to face.

"There are bullet holes. It's on the inside (of the station). So if someone was sitting in the office – like we are sitting now – they might have been killed. It is an extremely dangerous area to work and operate in. We found blocked drains at Bloemspruit and the area around the station was filthy," Boshoff adds.
