Bloemfontein - The Free Education Movement at the University of the Free State (UFS) has rejected the institution's decision to increase its tuition fees by 8% next year.

The University made the announcement on Wednesday afternoon.

The movement's Asive Dlanjwa says they appreciate the fact that the UFS has some of the lowest tuition fees among the country's institutions of higher education. However, he believes the fact that scores of students are still struggling to pay their outstanding debts, emphasises just how unaffordable tertiary education is countrywide. And, while outgoing SRC president, Lindokuhle Ntuli, is heartened by the fact that the 8% increase will only affect those with a household income of more than R600 000 per year, Dlanjwa says the Free Education Movement will not accept any increase whatsoever.

Ntuli meanwhile says the call for free education will continue, despite the University's announcement.
