Bethulie - The two murderers of well-known Smithfield GP, Bennie Cilliers, have been handed long sentences in the Bethulie Circuit Court.

Thabang Jordaan received 22 years for robbery, life for murder and 10 years for attempted murder. David Zamayo received the same sentence, but two years less than Jordaan for the robbery charge.

Judge Liza Tsatsi took a short adjournment to consider arguments on the murderers' application to appeal their conviction and sentence. She dismissed the application.

Jordaan and Zamayo stood accused of the attempted murder of Cilliers' wife Cecilia and the robbery at their farm house. The incident happened in January this year on their farm, Gouda, near Rouxville.

The two men broke into the farm house of the sleeping couple and attacked them with a heavy icon bar and a plastic fencing pole. Cilliers did not survive the attack and died due to head injuries sustained during the attack. Cecilia spent a long period in ICU, following the attack.
