Eskom power cuts: FS government to look at electricity tariffs | News Article
Free State Finance MEC Elzabe Rockman (OFM News)

Bloemfontein - Free State Finance MEC, Elzabe Rockman, says provincial government will have to look at the tariffs consumers are charged for electricity, as one means of helping municipalities to square their debt to Eskom.

Six municipalities in the province - Nketoana, Nala, Tokologo, Mantsopa, Dihlabeng and Masilonyana - faced power supply interruptions from today as a result of debt worth hundreds of millions of rands. Rockman, however, says all six are in the clear for now, after payment agreements were reached with Eskom yesterday. Dihlabeng, Masilonyana and Nala were saved by a multimillion-rand bailout by provincial treasury.

Rockman says a rocky road still lies ahead to address the outstanding arrears in the Free State.

Nine other central South African municipalities are facing power cuts, starting this week. In North West the Ventersdorp, Mamusa and Naledi municipalities will face electricity supply interruptions from today.

From Wednesday power will be cut to the Ubuntu and Renosterberg municipalities in the Northern Cape, as well as to the Lekwa-Teemane, Maquassi Hills, Madibeng and Kgetleng Rivier municipalities in North West.
