Man who defrauded central SA grain farmers worked alone─── CHRISTAL-LIZE MULLER 08:23 Thu, 19 Jan 2017
Welkom - The Hawks in the Free State say a Pretoria businessman who allegedly defrauded grain farmers in central South Africa of millions of rands was working alone.
Hawks spokesperson in the Free State, S'fiso Nyakane, says Gavin Stanley (46) was arrested in Welkom on Tuesday after he allegedly defrauded farm owners in the Northern Cape, Free State and North West of grain to the value of R7.6 million. According to him Stanley was on Tuesday summoned to come to the police's Organised Crime Unit in Welkom.
Nyakane says Stanley told farmers he knew someone who would buy their grain for a good price. He then disappeared with the goods. "He was arrested by the Hawks' Commercial Crime Unit after a thorough investigation which started in 2013. At this stage, there are five complainants."
Stanley briefly appeared in the Odendaalsrus Magistrate's Court on Tuesday and was granted R50 000 bail. He will be back in court on March 3.
