Kakamas - The Northern Cape Education Department has confirmed that the Kakamas High School will remain closed until further notice.

Education spokesperson, Geoffrey van der Merwe, says the school has been temporarily closed since Tuesday following an uproar by parents about the permanent appointment of the school's acting headmaster. Van der Merwe says the school will re-open as soon as district officers from the department have thoroughly explained a High Court order to disgruntled parents.

They have been protesting outside the school demanding that the school’s acting headmaster, Derick Coetzee, be permanently appointed in the position. According to Van der Merwe a court order, however, states that the current deputy principal act in Coetzee’s position pending a court battle.

Coetzee was dismissed in 2007 after he was found guilty of sexual misconduct related to the pregnancy of a learner at the school. A parent, who is also a member of the School Governing Body, was granted an urgent interdict at the High Court in Kimberley which forbids Coetzee from entering the school pending a review application for his appointment.
