DA councillor’s murder trial to commence in March | News Article

Postmasburg – A trial date has been set for the case against six men accused of killing Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor, Johannes Baatjies, in August 2016.


The matter has been referred to the Kimberley High Court for trial which will commence on 13 March 2017 and all six suspects remained in custody after appearing before the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 23 January.

Hawks spokesperson, Philani Nkwalase, says suspects Zonisele Magawu (29), Charles Thompson Mpondomisa (39), Matthews Legodu (49), Richard Hasana (33), Paullis Mvuleni Mgcera (50), and Tsame Frak Baxane (31) remained in police custody and their bail application was denied last year.

All suspects are facing the murder charges relating to the killing of Baatjies and his business associate, Shupping Nose.

Magawu was arrested shortly after the incidents, Mpondomisa, Legodu and Hasana were arrested in September while Mgcera and Baxane were arrested in October.
