Kimberley - A Sol Plaatje official has appeared in the Kimberley Magistrate's Court on fraud-related charges linked to apparent illegal activities with building plans.
Hawks spokesperson Philani Nkwalase says the 48-year-old technical assistant, Theodor Williams, employed at the municipality's building control unit, was granted bail of R2 500. The case against Williams has been postponed to February 24.
He allegedly charged residents for the approval of building plans to new and existing buildings. Nkwalase says the investigation has shown that the alleged fraud took place between 2011 and 2016. About ten victims approached the police so far in connection with the matter.
Williams faces charges of fraud and corruption as well as non-disclosure of crucial information at the time of his appointment. Police say the estimated value of the fraudulent acts, combined with the salary gained during the period of his employment, exceeds R2.2 million.
