Cosatu to strike against closure of FS poultry farms | News Article

Bloemfontein - The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) in the Free State believes that mass action in the form of a march is one of the ways it can stop the closure of poultry factories in the Free State.

Cosatu's provincial secretary, Monyatsi oa Mahlatsi, says they received notice from some poultry farmers that they will be closing down some of their production factories as they cannot compete with the influx of imported chicken on the South African market. The imports are significantly cheaper than local produce.

Mahlatsi says the union hopes to spark some dialogue with the government on the matter as well as stop the closure of these factories as this will result in job cuts for many, which the economy cannot afford.

He further adds that for the union, the agreement regarding the chicken imports would be beneficial if there was a quota on the amount of chicken imported. He says this chicken, which comes in unlabelled packaging, should also be packaged correctly so that consumers know exactly what they are buying.

The march to the Department of Economic, Small Business Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs (DESTEA), will take place on February 17 in Bloemfontein.
