Upington soldier still in custody in KZN | News Article

Durban - The SANDF soldier stationed at Upington, who went on a shooting spree north of Durban earlier this month killing one person and injuring three others, will remain in custody until the 28th of this month when his bail application continues.

Thembinkosi Ngcobo faced a barrage of questions in the Ntuzuma Magistrate's Court from his legal representative and the prosecutor yesterday.

East Coast Radio Newswatch's Shaun Ryan reports that Ngcobo's bail application got underway yesterday afternoon following an initial postponement.

When he did take to the stand, Ngcobo's attorney Paul Jargenson asked him a line of questions confirming his personal details such as his address, work and family.

The SANDF member has two young children, aged four and one month, and supports his family of 16 people.

The State's representative questioned Ngcobo on the protocols of an SANDF member leaving a base.

Ncgobo allegedly left his base in Upington and drove to Ntuzuma before the shooting incident.

Ngcobo is accused of opening fire while looking for his girlfriend.

Defence Web reports the rifleman from Upington-headquartered 8 SA Infantry Battalion, had apparently fathered a baby with a woman he subsequently believed was having an affair, and drove from Upington to Durban to look for her.
