Mahikeng – Three people, including a child, have died this week in the North West province after flash floods caused by heavy rain.

North West Premier Supra Mahumapelo said in a statement a primary school boy drowned while attempting to cross a stream in Leporung near Makgobistad, while two people were killed in Lemenong, Phokeng, after their vehicle was swept away by flash floods.

Mahumapelo said areas worst affected by floods include Ratlou, Kagisano-Molopo, Greater Taung, Ramotshere Moiloa, Mahikeng, and the Moses Kotane, Rustenburg, Maquassi Hills, and Matlosana local municipalities.

Provincial government officials had been deployed around the province to evaluate the extent of damage caused by the on-going rainfall.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all the families during this sad time. We send our sincere sympathies to the families of the deceased,” Mahumapelo said.

Meanwhile, the Department of Community Safety's Rebaone Moeng says some roads have been reopened after they were closed due to flooding and water damage. He says the N12 bridge entering Wolmaransstad is open.
