Violence against women and children worries Lucas | News Article

Kimberley - One of Northern Cape Premier Sylvia Lucas' biggest concerns is the rise in sexual offences in the province.

Lucas said in her State of the Province Address this morning that there has been an increase of 141 cases in these offences, despite a decline in other violent crimes like murder, and robbery with aggravating circumstances.

Lucas dedicated her speech to Kutlwano Garesape, a young boy who lost his life trying to fight off an alleged rapist who attacked his mother last year. She says the people of the Northern Cape owe it to this boy to fight crime in the province. Lucas also said the widespread abuse of alcohol and drugs in the province are also leading to social ills and to curb these problems. The provincial government is going to work closely with all stakeholders in several community initiatives.
