Foreign couple survives shooting in their Alexandra home | News Article

Johannesburg - A foreign couple was shot and injured inside their home in Alexandra township on Monday night, in the latest spate of xenophobic violence, Defence Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula told reporters on Tuesday.

"We hear the lady was shot in the leg and in the neck, but she survived by the grace of God...The man was shot in the neck as well, but they are okay."

She said the couple had since been discharged from hospital on Tuesday morning.

"The couple has been booked out of hospital this morning [Tuesday], [the shooting] happened last night."

She was speaking to journalists in Alexandra following the appearance of four men charged with the murder of Mozambican national Emmanuel Sithole on Friday in the township. The matter was postponed to May 4 for a formal bail application.

Mapisa-Nqakula said the police ministry had sent a request to the SA National Defence Force (SANDF) asking for assistance in volatile regions of the country where xenophobic incidents had been reported.

The SANDF would not take the lead, its duty was to assist where the SA police service saw fit, she said.

The couple, which are believed to be Zimbabwean, needed to be protected from their attackers.

"Obviously it is in the interest of police to make sure that they are protected so that no one goes back and finishes them off, for [the couple] not to identify them. So we have a responsibility there, to protect them.

"They are a very critical link for us to identify the remnants of the four who were arrested over the weekend," she said.
