Johannesburg - Five people were shot and killed in two separate incidents in Alexandra, north of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Wednesday night.

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Lesiba Mothiba told journalists at the Alexandra police station that a police constable first shot dead a woman and three other people at the station at around 6pm. The woman had arrived at the police station to lodge a domestic violence complaint.

”The constable concerned arrived at Alexandra SAPS, shot the woman complainant and two others and a police major,” Mothiba said.

”The four people shot by the constable died on the scene at the police station, the constable fled the scene.” Mothiba said police officers followed the constable home, and upon seeing the police, he fired shot at them. Police returned fire and he was shot dead.

”We send condolences to families, friends and colleagues of those shot in tragedy.”

The Ipid [Independent Police Investigative Directorate] will also be involved in the investigation,” he said. Mothiba was accompanied by national police commissioner General Riah Phiyega and Gauteng Community Safety MEC Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane.
