Cape Town - Better strategies were needed to deal with police corruption, members of Parliament said on Tuesday.

This was after the Independent Police Investigative Directorate made a presentation on the cases registered of systemic corruption within SAPS to the police committee in Parliament.

Ipid said they had registered 30 systemic corruption cases since the implementation of the Ipid Act in April 2012.

Of the 30 cases, 14 were still active, 7 were "decision ready" while 9 were closed.

The Free State had the highest number, with 7, while the Western Cape had no cases reported.

This raised questions in the committee, as there were high ranking officers in the Western Cape who had been arrested in the past year, including former commissioner Arno Lamoer.

Lamoer and three others were facing 109 charges of corruption, fraud, money laundering and defeating the ends of justice.

Chairperson Francois Beukman said Ipid needed a strategy to deal with the gaps.

The committee suggested that Ipid start working on themes to target certain issues, like the selling of dockets.

Ipid acting head, Israel Kgamanyane, said they would take the advice into consideration.

The Eastern Cape, Mpumalanga and Gauteng had four each, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo two cases each, while the North West had one case registered.
